U.S. Airlines Letter - Tips to Get Discounts on Travel

Who doesn't love a bargain?

Who doesn’t appreciate a good bargain, especially in connection to travel? Regardless of whether you are travelling to an exotic destination or someplace closer to home, saving what you can is an attractive bonus. This is especially true if you are traveling with family, which can be expensive. Take time out to research ways to save on travel-related costs – the effort will be worth it. Here are some guidelines to help you save on family travel expenses.

Here come the tips!

Plan ahead

Trying for a last-minute deal will work for an individual or a couple traveling offseason, but will prove almost impossible for a family traveling with children during a specified vacation period. So always plan well in advance.

Sign up for online offers

You stand to save a lot of money by signing up for travel offers online. Some people don’t like to, citing the overwhelming flood of e-mail they receive as a result. Deal with this issue by creating a separate e-mail account for these offers. This will help identify suitable offers while keeping them separate from the rest of your e-mail.

Airfare discounts

Instead of buying tickets from travel sites, which typically charge extra, try the airline websites. Buying directly will also help you troubleshoot in case of any delays or changes.

Along with seeking discounts, you should also keep an eye out for free airline tickets. Several companies, like US Airlines, give away free air tickets as part of their promotional campaigns. If you get a US Airlines letter in your mail, make sure you don’t miss out on the opportunity.

Saving on food and drink

If you are traveling with kids, it’s vital that you control expenses in this category. Buy snacks and drinks before you begin your onward or homeward journeys. If you are staying at a hotel that has mini-bar facilities, ask the staff to clear it before you occupy the room. This will help prevent running up hefty bills if the kids raid it. You can then stock the fridge with inexpensive substitutes.

Special meal coupons

Many hotels offer a coupon booklet in each room offering discounts on food and beverages to encourage guests to eat in. Ensure that you carry this whenever you decide to have a meal at one of the restaurants in the hotel, as the discounts can be quite substantial.

Free or discounted admissions

Carry out some research on public establishments like art galleries, museums and other local hotspots at your destination. There are quite a few which offer weekdays where admission is free or heavily discounted. You can use this information when planning your itinerary.

Use public transportation

Make full use of your destination’s transit options, whether city buses, subways or skytrains, as they are much cheaper than cabs. Buy a city transit map to help you use the system.

These are just some of the ways you can save money while traveling with your family or on your own. You may be able to come up with several more. The cost of a family holiday can be pretty huge, so planning ahead and utilizing ways to cut expenses helps keep your expenses low.

These are some great tips Peter! My wife and I recently received the same US Airlines letter which I had planned to throw away until my wife had me call the number. We plan to take a little "get-away" trip to Myrtle Beach next month.

P.S. You're dead on with purchasing snacks before you begin your trip. The prices they charge for snacks at some of these places are ridiculous!

Excellent article! US Airlines seems to be turning things around. I've been seeing a lot of great deals by them lately.

ricki60 15 months ago

I think the problem with most people is that their to lazy to search for deals...These deals are out there you just need to do a little research. I haven't received any letters from US Airlines but I have heard of getting "complimentary tickets". Now to hope a couple come my way...

NelsonSL 15 months ago

I received the same letter from US Airlines. I'm glad i came across with this blog. I was gonna throw the letter away cause i think it was a another scam. Thanks!

Mini_KIKI 15 months ago

jaysun 15 months ago

tomsbabyjenna 15 months ago

how can I get one of these u.s airline letters? I am getting married in 3 months and certainly could benefit from the savings. There are some great tips here that I didn't know about that certainly will be using now thanks! I hope the hotel that I have does have these coupons booklets as we will be exploring the city on our honeymoon and though we want to have fun I sure want to save money!

Frank 15 months ago

@jaysun @tomsbabyjenna - I'm a frequent US Airlines flier so I think that's how I received them. It could also be a random pick between previous US Airline customers. Either way seeing that letter in the mail was very exciting.

Kimmy 15 months ago

Nice article. Where do we look for all of these discounts? Me, my husband and our 3 children take a vacation every summer and it would be nice to start saving a bit more on these trips. We've never flown though, it would be nice to get free airline tickets.

Tom Stensen 15 months ago

My girlfriend not too long ago received these US Airline complimentary tickets. It's a pretty interesting way of promoting their airlines, but it doesn't seem like too many people are talking about this. You think they would, it's free airline tickets I mean c'mon!

Angela 15 months ago

Great travel tips. I actually did receive the US Airline letter. I thought it was just junk mail at first, but after reading through this I'm reallyglad I didn't throw it away!

Chris 15 months ago

Oh man, I would absolutely LOVE to get a letter from US Airlines saying that I got a free holiday! Where do I sign up?

kevinmars 15 months ago

@Frank - oh no, now I wish I had signed up to be a frequent flyer with them just so that I can get this US Airline letter prize!

Janice Bukign 15 months ago

I got a us airlines letter in the mail too! I opened it, was skeptical and then googled it which led me to this article! Great news to see it's not a scam!

Allen 15 months ago

Museums can be a lot more fun than people think, not to mention they can be fairly cheap unless you go to those Ripley type museums. The children loved the Ripley's aquarium and museum last time we went to Florida. If you look around your hotel or maybe even the airport there are tons of fliers with coupons. Just keep an eye out for them.

jenybean54 15 months ago

@Allen - The last hotel we stayed at had racks of fliers and coupons! It was great! If we weren't sure what we wanted to do that night we just went down to the lobby and picked up a handful of fliers.

jenna hesselink 15 months ago

I will certainly have to look into some of these deals. It sounds like it really pays off to do some research and see what is available. I wonder how many people get a letter from the us airlines think its some type of junk mail and miss out on such a great opportunity.

Christian 15 months ago

I travel a lot, although mainly for business, and I've never heard of complimentary tickets. I'm surprised to actually see that people do receive these in the mail. Great marketing strategy.

Ricky 15 months ago

Hey even i received the letter from U.S Airlines about a month ago it consisted of COMPLEMENTARY Airlines Vouchers..

wow , that was so awesome i could not believe that i received free air tickets..

then i went to a place called TRAVEL & DISCOUNT and collected my complementary tickets and me and my wife fled to our much awaited holiday Trip!!

Thanks a lot to that U.S airlines letter and of course people at Travel & Discount were to polite and gentle to provide me with my free Ticlets. :)

ben 15 months ago

i received these free tickets too! i also picked them up from travel & discount - i can't believe that it was real!

Lina 15 months ago

Wow, that would be pretty neat to receive that letter from US Airlines! Hope they drop one in my mail box soon!

Gail Webner 15 months ago

The weather is beautiful outside so I decided to book a vacation online! Leaving in JUNE!!! I love the beach and thanks for the discount tips. I actually went to the US Airlines website to book my tickets. Hopefully they'll send me some complimentary tickets as well!

shelby 15 months ago

I wonder if you purchase us airlines tickets before are you more likely to get a letter from the us airlines with complimentary tickets? I could think of so many places I would love to visit. It would be so hard to narrow it down to one! A girl can keep dreaming though. Whenever I travel next I will be sure to bring my own snacks, as they are better for me and the treats given are just to expensive. I'll have to check the hotel to as well for brochures of stuff to do around town.

Oliver 15 months ago

I haven't received the US Airlines letter... but I guess I can keep dreaming. :)

zack 15 months ago

I haven't received the letter from US Airlines either, but I agree with your tips about signing up for online offers.

peterthomann Hub Author 15 months ago

There appears to be some confusion. The letter is regarding major US airlines. Meaning, the airline tickets you receive are good for select US airlines. Meaning, major airlines based out of the United States = US Airlines.

tracy 15 months ago

Are these us airline letters good for only certain locations? Like Are there restrictions? I can't imagine getting such a great deal and getting to go where ever you want. I would love to go anywhere though if its free its great. I wouldn't complain.

Max 15 months ago

Oh really, US Airline letter offer is for any major airline that is based in the USA? Well that makes it even better! Although who can really deny a legitimate free air ticket is beyond me.

Cameron 15 months ago

This letter from the US Airlines are 100% real! I picked up my ticket earlier in the week from Travel & Discount. :)

kingston 15 months ago

You can pick them up? I thought it was just sent to you. Like a raffle only certain people would be sent a letter from the us airlines.

Frank 15 months ago

@kingston - Hmm... I guess what they mean is that they get this free air ticket offer letter from US Airlines and then they have to go pick it up from Travel & Discount?

laura 15 months ago

wow this opportunity sounds amazing. if anyone receives this letter from us airlines and doesn't want the free tickets, please send them to me! lol!

susie 15 months ago

these letters from the us airlines sound to good to be true! I wonder how many though they are giving away, is there a limit? How much are they spending on these lists? It has to be so much, I hope its worth it for them somehow like rebookings or something.

kinsey 15 months ago

Once I get my letter from the us airlines this is a great article chock full of tips to use to save even more money. On top of being free the tickets would be nice, but why spend good hard money when there is so much to be saved?

liam 15 months ago

How do you get these free tickets? Some people mentioned a website, does anyone know the link? Can I just type in the words and somehow find it on google?
